William “Bill” McCabe went home to be with the Lord at the age of 77 on December 6th after a brief battle with lung cancer. He and his wife of 33 years, Ielene, were residents of the Palisades Assisted Living Community at the time of his passing. Prior to that, the McCabe’s were long time residents of Horizon City, TX. Bill was born in Philadelphia, PA May 27, 1931 to John Joseph McCabe Sr. and Hannah Woodward McCabe. He enlisted in the US Army in 1949 retiring in 1969. During his 20 years of service, he served in the HHC 15th Ordnance Battalion and attained the rank of Sgt. FC earning the National Defense Service Medal and 4 Good Conduct Medals. Upon his retirement, he was employed with the El Paso City Water Utilities for several years and then joined the Texas Department of Transportation where he worked for 20 years until his retirement in 1993. He was a long-time member of The American Legion post # 598, Horizon City Lions Club and VFW post #10354 serving in many offices. He also volunteered for the Horizon City Fire Department and VA Medical Center. He is predeceased by his parents, brothers Harry McCabe, Edward McCabe and sister Ruth Poore. He is survived by his wife, Ielene Turner McCabe, daughter, Kelly Higgins, her husband, Ron Higgins, grandson, Lance Higgins, brothers John Joseph McCabe Jr., George McCabe and sisters Edith Crowthers and Elizabeth Massey. Viewing and memorial service will be at the Sunset Funeral Home at 4631 Hondo Pass at 1:00-3:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday December 14, 2008. A Funeral Service will be at Sunset Funeral Homes-Northeast at 10:00 a.m. Monday December 15, 2008. Interment will be at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.
