Major Wilfrid Hunter of The Salvation Army is now safely in the arms of Jesus. He is survived by his wife Camerina, son Wilfrid George and wife Janet, daughter Mary Alice. His grandchildren are Randy and his wife, Chari, Jenifer, and Ana. His extended family includes Lt. Col Barbara Hunter (daughter-in-law), brother and wife Leslie and Dorothy Hunter of Tucson. Through Camerina he became brother-in-law to three sisters, Socorro, Vicenta, Bernada, and uncle to 6 nephews and nieces and one great-grand-niece. His first wife, Eleanor, preceded him in death in 1975. His oldest son Robert William passed away in 2001. A long time resident of El Paso, Wilf first moved here in 1963 to become the city commander of The Salvation Army. El Paso was his longest and most enjoyable appointment of his entire career in The Salvation Army. He thoroughly enjoyed his involvement in the community through the ministry of The Salvation Army as well as service organizations. Many of his friends will remember his love of the game of golf. His young ambition was to become a professional golfer, but he set it aside to serve his Lord and Savior, Jesus. Golf was never far from his heart, so it was a highlight of his life to be a partner with Lee Trevino in a charity golf exhibition. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 24, 2007 from 5-9 PM at Sunset Funeral Homes, Northeast, 4631 Hondo Pass, El Paso, with a Celebration of Life Service at 7 PM.
