Washington Beryl James, born on June 28, 1923 in Batesville , MS to John B. and Marie (Peoples) James, passed away on September 15, 2011. He was the next to the youngest of five children and only son. He was given the nickname “Bubba” from his sister Frances who could not say “brother” and it stuck with him throughout his life. He joined Myrtle Avenue Methodist Church in 1957 and publicly confessed Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior under Reverend M.J. Reed. After graduating from high school Washington enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943, serving for 24 years including World War II and the Korean Conflict. After retiring from the U.S. Army in 1967 he worked for Raytheon Co. and later retired from Popular Dry Goods after 15 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Marie James; and sisters: Johnnie McGhee, Frances Dugger, and Rose Marie James. In 1952, Washington married Helen Lynn Miles. He is survived by his wife, Helen; children, Deborah (Bedford, TX), Washington Jr. (Amarillo, TX) and Jacqueline (Arlington, VA); his twin sister, Nava L. James; and niece, Rose Marie Dugger. Washington called El Paso home for more than 55 years and enjoyed fishing, reading, electronics, music and was an avid sports fan, especially watching football, basketball, golf and tennis. Visitation will be held from 6-8pm, Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at Sunset Funeral Home Northeast. Funeral Services will begin at 9am, Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at Center Chapel located on Fort Bliss. Interment will follow at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
