Wyvonia Oleta (Vona) Uxer passed away May 14, 2013 surrounded by her loving family. She was born to W.A. and Clara Stroud in Clovis NM on April 22, 1925. She married the love of her life, John E. Uxer Sr., on August 19, 1944 while he was on a brief shore leave during WWII. Their commitment and love carried them through long separations in two major military conflicts and resulted in 68 years of togetherness. She provided a nurturing environment for son John Jr. and daughter Anne. Vona influenced the lives of countless students in the 21 years she taught at Zach White Elementary. In retirement, she began a quilting ministry at First Baptist Church through the encouragement of Pastor Levi Price. Vona is survived by husband John; son John, Jr. and wife Alma Lois; daughter Anne and husband James Stewart; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She is also survived by brother J.P. Stroud and sisters Carolyn Marshall and Colleen Ezell and beloved nieces and nephews. Visitation at Sunset Funeral Home 480 N. Resler on Sunday, May 19 from 3:00 to 5:00 P.M. A celebration of her life will be held at First Baptist Church, 805 Montana Ave. on Monday, May 20 at 10:00 A.M. with Dr. David Lowrie and Dr. Bob Nickell officiating. Interment following at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery at 1:00 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Quilting Ministry of First Baptist Church.
