Susan Ann Starr

November 5, 1955 — January 18, 2022

Susan Ann Starr, age 66, of El Paso, Texas passed away peacefully at home on January 18, 2022 after a nearly two-year battle with uterine cancer. Susan was born on November 5, 1955 to Norman Delano McKay and Barbara Ann Pringle in Seattle, Washington. After graduating from Chief Sealth High School in 1974, she enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps, beginning twenty years of service in the United States Army. Her Army career was particularly notable as she served eleven years at the White House Communications Agency under several United States Presidents and traveled as a Vice Presidential Communications Officer. She then attended the Sergeants Major Academy before retiring from the Army in 1995. After her time in the Army, Susan went on to serve in civil service, retiring for good in 2018. It was through the Army that she met her beloved husband, Richard Harry Starr, in Germany on Valentine’s Day in 1977, and they married in 1978. Susan and Richard went on to have two daughters, Kellie Dawn Starr (now Price) and Jennifer Lee Starr (now Lindquist). Susan lived in El Paso for nearly 30 years, attending church for over a decade at the Chapel of North Hills, where she enjoyed playing her flute at Sunday worship services. Susan loved “glamping,” walking, and hiking. She completed the full 26.2-mile Bataan Memorial Death March in 2017 and 2018, coming in 3rd place for her age-group in 2018. She considered her “happy place” to be hiking the trails in Franklin Mountain State Park. She encouraged others to “just walk” by hosting regular walking challenges on Facebook, which still run today. Susan regularly hosted friends and family at her home, where she strived to make everyone feel welcome. Susan was predeceased by her father. She is survived by her husband, Richard; daughters Kellie and Jennifer; their spouses, Carl Price and Roland Lindquist; grandchildren Nathaniel, Kellie, Brad, Hailey, Saqqara, Hayden, Cade, and Harper; her mother; her siblings; and countless nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Sunset Funeral Home on Hondo Pass on February 2nd from 4-8 PM. A graveside service will be held at Fort Bliss National Cemetery on February 3rd at 11:30.
