Steven Ray Bishop, 49, of El Paso, Texas, was taken home to his Father in Heaven Sunday morning, July 14, 2024, from M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. His family has a deep and abiding faith in our Father in Heaven, and they know Steven, who faithfully served Him and His people his whole life, was welcomed home with open arms and much rejoicing on the other side of the veil. He is at peace and was most assuredly greeted by a host of family members and friends who have gone before.
Steven was born April 11, 1975, in Charlotte, North Carolina to Roy and Deborah Donaldson Bishop. He was a boisterous youth and was bigger than life and full of love and compassion for others. As a man, he had a large stature but an even larger personality. He enjoyed making others laugh and could be found sharing anecdotes and jokes, lines from movies, etc. to entertain and uplift spirits.
From 2001 to 2003 Steven faithfully served a 2-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Arizona Tucson Mission, serving most of his time in Texas including El Paso, where he later returned to visit. There he met and married the love of his life, Rocio Myres Bishop. They wed on December 7, 2006, in El Paso. And on December 8th, they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Juarez, Mexico Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. After a few months of married life, Steven moved to El Paso with his wife to be near her family. They were blessed with two beautiful children: a daughter, Sophia, and a son, Brandon.
He served valiantly in the church in many capacities including President of the Young Men’s, Elder’s Quorum, and Sunday School Programs. He was a Ward Clerk, a High Priest, a Stake High Councilor and, most recently, Bishop of the El Paso First Ward.
Steven spent many years being his own boss in various ventures. Steven owned and operated several small businesses in North Carolina, including a computer repair company called Go Cyber, in Southern Pines, which he co-owned with his brother-in-law, Steve Blood and good friend, Andrew Thompson. His entrepreneurial spirit followed him to El Paso where he owned a few more businesses, including a Handyman Service that employed many small contractors in the community. After the construction downturn from Covid, he found his dream job with Charles Schwab in September 2021. He swiftly and efficiently passed his licensing exams and quickly rose in the ranks becoming a Senior Specialist.
Steven is survived by a large family: his wife Rocio, and their 2 children, Sophia and Brandon; his parents, Roy and Deborah Donaldson Bishop and nine siblings; Jenifer Blood and spouse Steve, Bonnie Brooks, and spouse Paul, Rebecca Leggett, Melanie Sanchez and spouse Nefi, Michael Bishop and spouse Jennifer, Robert Bishop, David Bishop and spouse Jessica, Luke Bishop and spouse Austin, and Jeff Bishop and fiancé Merle Kitterman, his father-in-law, Lorenzo Myres, brothers-in-law Rogelio Myres, Alejandro Myres, Samuel Myres and spouse Diana, and sister-in-law, Alejandra Villalpando and spouse Jesus Alberto. He is also survived by his grandmother, Anne Bishop, Uncle John Bishop and Spouse Mila Bishop, Aunt Debra Bishop Bedard and spouse Michael Bedard, and Aunt Renee Donaldson Goodman, and his nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews and numerous extended family. He was predeceased by one brother, Bobby Lee Bishop, II, his mother-in-law, Josephina Myres Hernandez, and grandparents Bobby Bishop, I, Russell Donaldson, Jr. and Betty Creswell Donaldson.
