Stephen Warren Hill, July 30-1950-September 18, 2012 Stephen Warren Hill was born on July 30th 1950 in Florence Alabama. He was the son of Julius Warren Hill and Katherine Turner Hill. He is survived by his brother, Charles. Stephen was a resident of El Paso, Texas since 1952. He graduated from El Paso High School in 1969 and attended the University of Texas at El Paso until he decided to make a career in broadcast journalism. Stephen began his broadcast career at KSET Radio and then became the assistant sports director at KDBC in the early 1970’s. He would eventually become the sports director at KDBC where he was the television voice for UTEP basketball broadcasts. His co-hosts for the broadcasts included Nevil Shed and Nolan Richardson. Stephen also was a weekend sports anchor for KVIA television before moving to Odessa, Texas where he worked at KOSA TV and was the voice of Odessa Permian Football. Stephen returned to El Paso in the early 1980’s and was hired as the assistant sports information director at UTEP where he worked with Eddie Mullens and Coach Don Haskins. Steve would eventually become a member of the UTEP statistics crew where part of his job was to keep special statistics for Coach Haskins. He remained a member of the stat crew until his death and was recognized in 2011 with a special presentation for his 46 years of service to UTEP athletics. Steve is probably best remembered as the voice and recognized authority on El Paso high school football. He first did broadcasts for KTSM Radio with host, Joe Fan. Steve became the co-host and producer of Friday Night Football at KROD Radio. Steve was passionate about high school football and spent countless hours preparing for his weekly broadcasts. He truly loved the coaches and athletes of El Paso. One of Steve’s proudest achievements was being elected to the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002 in the Media Category. Steve served as a vice president and president of the Hall and was an active member until his death. Steve had a great love for El Paso, UTEP, and high school athletics. His contributions were numerous and he will sorely be missed by all that knew him.
