Stella L. Sinn

Stella Jayne Lewis Sinn, (91) passed away on Wednesday, January 14, 2009, at her home, 300 Shadow Mountain Drive, El Paso, TX after a lingering illness. Stella was a native of Illinois, having been born on January 5, 1918 in Aledo, Il, the only child of Ed and Mary Lewis. She graduated from the local high school in Aledo and then attended the University of Iowa, Iowa City where she was active in many academic and social activities. She took special interest in her membership in the Alpha Delta Pi sorority and served as its president. Even after graduating from the University with a bachelor's degree in history in 1942, Stella maintained close contact with the Iowa chapter of her sorority. She was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church. Stella left the University to devote a long professional career in teaching English and language arts. In her later years she broadened this teaching interest to include remedial reading. Finally she moved from a full-time teacher to the position of librarian. Stella's teaching included positions in the Quad Cities schools as well as a final position in the East Dubuque, IL school district. She retired from the educational field in 1974 when her husband retired from the Deere Company. On May 1, 1943, Stella was united in marriage with Robert I Sinn whom she met as a student at the University of Iowa. The marriage took place in Sikeston, MO at the First Methodist Church near the base at which Bob was stationed in the United States Army Air Corps. Bob and Stella traveled extensively in the United States and Europe. Ultimately, they left the Midwest for warmer climes and finally settled in El Paso, TX after shorter time periods living in Kerrville, TX, and San Antonio, TX. Stella's husband passed away on February ll, 2007 after a short illness. She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Dolores Wolters of Sarasota, FL and Alberta (Norman) Kallaus of Iowa City, IA as well as four nieces, Anne Wallace, Meg Thompson, Clare Phillips, and Beth Hecimovich, and one nephew, John Wolters. TX. Services for Stella will be held on Monday, January 19, 2009 at 2:00 pm at Sunset Funeral Home- West. Services entrusted to Sunset Funeral Home-West.
