Dwain Leon Johnson was born in Lindsborg, Kansas on Oct. 15, 1942. He grew up in Lakeport Northern California where he graduated from Clear Lake Union High School in 1960. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served 7 years as an Engine Man on the Destroyer USS. Nicholas. In 1975, He graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso with a degree in Criminal Justice.
In 1969, he moved to El Paso where his life of community service began. He served 25 years in the El Paso Police Department. He served as a Patrolman, Detective, and Sergeant.
In 1973, he was the first policeman to write his own newspaper column in his own byline, called “Code 3”. In 1978, he organized the first “Crime Stoppers” program in Texas. Crime Stoppers became a huge success; it is now used to fight crime in the entire United States. He was promoted to EPPD Homicide Sergeant then graduated from FBI academy in Quantico, Virginia. He worked in homicide for 14 years and started the first “Homicide Investigators of Texas” program (HIT). He organized the South West Homicide Training Seminars which was extended to ALL Homicide detectives in the United States. He retired from the El Paso Police Department in July 1995 as Homicide Sargent.
He loved El Paso and his beloved Franklin Mountains that he climbed regularly. He was happily married to his wife of 32 years; Leticia. He is also survived by his son; Michael (Erica) and two grandsons, Lyndon and Lincoln and son Dwain Johnson Jr. and granddaughter Kristina.
A Visitation will be held from 2:00pm to 6:00pm on Tuesday, August 29, 2023 with Navy Honors commencing at 3:30pm, EPPD Honors at 3:45pm, and a Rosary at 4:00pm, at Sunset Funeral Homes-West.
