With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Santiago Ernest Vigil, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who left us on August 29, 2024, at the age of 88.
Born on July 14, 1936, in Walsenburg, Colorado, Santiago’s life was a testament to his unwavering commitment to service and his profound love for his family. He dedicated 23 years to the U.S. Air Force, retiring as a Master Sergeant, a role that reflected his deep sense of duty and patriotism. After retiring from the military, Santiago continued his legacy of service through a distinguished 22-year career with the U.S. Postal Service, where his reliability and dedication were greatly valued.
Santiago’s most cherished role was that of husband to Eulogia 'Locha' Vigil, whom he married on November 25, 1962. Their enduring love, which lasted for 61 years, was a beacon to all who knew them, creating a life filled with shared memories and deep affection.
He was a devoted father to John Vigil and Patti Medina (Lorenzo Medina), and his heart aches with the loss of his late son, Ernie Vigil. Santiago’s spirit lives on through his grandchildren: Lauren and Jacob Vigil, Briana and Gabrielle Medina, and John Jr. and Josh Vigil. His joy was evident in his role as a great-grandfather to two great-grandchildren, Lucio and Ariana Levario, whose presence brought him immense happiness.
Santiago is also remembered by his younger siblings: Betty Bissonette and Frances Freer. He was preceded in death by his siblings Viola James, Nora Chavez, and Sherma Lorincz.
A passionate sports fan, Santiago took great pride in cheering for his Denver Broncos. His playful banter with family and friends about his Broncos being better than the Dallas Cowboys was a cherished part of his personality, creating many joyful moments and laughs.
Santiago also found great fulfillment in sharing his experiences and stories from his time in the U.S. Air Force. He eagerly connected with fellow veterans and current service members, offering wisdom and camaraderie that reflected his enduring commitment to those who have served.
Throughout his life, Santiago was known for his kindness, his generosity, and his strong work ethic. He touched the lives of many with his warm smile and his readiness to lend a helping hand. His memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
