Ruben Schaeffer

Ruben Schaeffer Ruben Schaeffer passed away peacefully in his home at the age of 91 on Sunday, October 16, 2016. He will be missed and remembered for his kindness, generosity, and his devotion to his family. Ruben was dedicated to the welfare of others and he led by example. His desire to help stemmed from a genuine interest in the individual, and his wish to see them succeed. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1943-1946, stationed at Ulithi, Caroline Islands; He enjoyed a successful career as a real estate broker and developer for over 55 years, and was one of the first El Pasoan to hold a CCIM designation. He was past president and director of the El Paso Board of Realtors and president of the National Association of Realtors. His civic involvement included service as Alderman and Mayor Pro Tem of El Paso from 1972-1976, where he was involved in laying the groundwork for the Tom Mays Park, The Wilderness Park Museum and other community projects. He was one of the founders and first president of the El Paso Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. He and his wife, Flora, were committed to increasing community awareness for the needs of the Deaf. He served on the Board for the Texas Youth Commission from 1975-1983. He was an advocate for troubled youth and was honored with the dedication of the Schaeffer House in 1984. He is preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Flora A. Schaeffer, who passed in 2006, and his son Robert A. Schaeffer, who passed in 1993. He is survived by his children: Ruben G. Schaeffer, Anna Brooks, Michael Schaeffer, Paula Schaeffer, and his grandson Patrick Schaeffer. He is also survived by grandchildren: Kathleen Schaeffer, Michael O’Bannon, Nicholas Schaeffer, Brandon Schaeffer, Sarah Schaeffer, Rachel Schaeffer Barraza, Flora Schaeffer, James Brooks, Rose Everhard, Faith Nulk, Paul Brooks, David Brooks, Isaiah Brooks, Josiah Brooks, and great grandchildren: Nicholas Acosta, Aubrey Schaeffer, Brandon Schaeffer, Jr., Dylan Everhard, and Mia and Hope Barraza. Funeral Mass will be at 11:30AM on Friday, October 28, 2016 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 602 S Oregon St, El Paso, TX 79901, followed by Graveside Service at Mount Carmel Cemetery.
