In world news, September 28, 1940 is the day the first fleet of U.S. destroyers arrived in Britain as an agreement between the U.S. and the U.K. It is also the day Rolando Cervantes arrived - prematurely - in San Antonio, TX. He was the third of six children and was a force to be reckoned with. Rolando grew up very loved and protected, which put him on a path to love and protect all those whom he called friends.
Rolando would eventually marry the love of his life, Elvira, and together they created a love affair that beat all odds. In 1974, after growing tired of endless jobs, Rolando joined the U.S. Army - a decision that would afford them the opportunity to see the world. Rolando earned several awards and medals in his eighteen years of service, which included four overseas ribbon awards, a Kuwait Liberation medal and a M16 rifle expert badge.
Rolando chose to retire, with honorable discharge, in 1992 due to injuries sustained during his tour in Kuwait. Upon his retirement, he held various jobs in security and retail. He loved to bake and would often bake cakes and pies for his co-workers. He formed many friendships over the years. He finally retired for good in 2015 at the age of 75.
If you were blessed enough to know Rolando Cervantes, you would have learned three life lessons: 1) Life without humor isn't worth living - he could bring a smile to your face even on the darkest of days. 2) Always exhibit a strong work ethic - he would give 110% at any task he was given. 3) Family and friendship are everything - not a day went by without him letting people know what they meant to him.
In world news, September 29, 2024 is a day millions of people faced a power outage due to Hurricane Helene. There was also darkness in El Paso, TX as the light in Rolando Cervantes also went out. He was preceded in death by his parents (Delfina, Frank), his brothers (Frank, Jr., Alfonso) and his wife (Elvira). He leaves behind two brothers (David, John), a sister (Rosalie), three daughters, three sons-in-law, 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He was deeply loved and will be sorely missed. Rest easy dad! You've earned it.
