Roberto G. Hernández, known to his family and friends as “Beto” passed away on Sunday, May 16, 2010 at the age of 88. He was born April 24, 1922 the only son of Pedro and Dolores Hernández in Anthony, New Mexico. Beto was a devoted member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, serving as an altar server and volunteer. Beto proudly and honorably served his country in the United States Army Air Corp and was a member of the American Legion Post #122. After his service in the Army, Beto returned to his home in Anthony, where he owned and operated three establishments, including the infamous Line Bar where he had many friends that enjoyed spending time together sharing stories. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Esperanza Hernández, Socorro Jacquez and Lydia Morales. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Nellie; his son Robert Hernández, his daughters, Mary Alice Ríos, Cynthia SinghDhillon and Diana Rey; nine grandchildren, Melissa, Matthew, Joshua, Vanessa, Elizabeth, Robert, Erienne, Taylor and Angelina; 3 great grandchildren, Elizabeth, Kaycee, and Kaden. Beto is further survived by his sisters, Celina Barajas and Lencha Sierra; and many other family members. Visitation will be held from 5:00-9:00 pm, Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Anthony, NM with recital of the Vigil beginning 7:00 pm. Funeral Mass will be held at 8:30 am, Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. Interment to follow at Fort Bliss National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to American Kidney Fund, 1713 Wisconsin Ave, Bethesda, MD 20814. Services entrusted to Sunset Funeral Home-West.
