Bob passed away on Sunday morning, November 15, at the Monte Vista at Coronado Nursing Home. He celebrated his 92nd birthday with family members on Nov. 10. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley, in 1991. He was born in Columbus, Nebraska in 1917 to Edward and Marie Wurdeman. He had 2 brothers, Edward and Oswald, and two sisters, Frieda and Adele. He was a graduate of Minneapolis West High School and a graduate of Dunwoody Industrial Institute with a diploma in electronics. He entered the Army in February 1941. While home on leave in 1944, Bob married Shirley Reetz. Then, he received orders to Europe at the time of the Bulge. He survived of the sinking of the troopship, Leopoldville, off the coast of France on Christmas Eve 1944. He is a veteran of the Korean War where he received his second Purple Heart. He moved to El Paso in 1958 to enter the Anti-Aircraft Guided Missile field at Fort Bliss. After 20 years of service, he retired as a Major and left El Paso only to return, as it was the place he enjoyed living the most. He enjoyed traveling with his family throughout the world. He is survived by his children: Lew of Farmington MN, Dale and his wife, Sandra, of Wausau WI, Roy and his wife, Marlene, of El Paso TX, Jana and her husband, Mark Alvarez of El Paso, TX, and Fred of El Paso TX. He has 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. There will be a memorial service at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3800 Hondo Pass, El Paso, TX at 9:30 a.m. on Friday December 4, followed by interment at Fort Bliss National Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church to help complete the stained glass in the sanctuary.
