Robert Lee Wardell

Robert Lee Wardell, 65, went home to be with the Lord on January 16, 2017. Robert Lee Wardell was born in Vicksburg, MS, on February 28, 1951. He graduated from Rosa A. Temple High School in 1969. He volunteered for the United States Army in 1970. He completed basic training at Fort Polk, LA. He married the love of his life, Mamie Thompson on March 27, 1970. His hobbies were all sports. He was a coach, player, mentor and official for over 30 years. He retired from the U.S. Army as MSG on August 1, 1994. His tours of duty included: Vietnam, Fort Campbell, KY, Fort Richardson, AK, Fort Stewart, GA, Neu Ulm, Germany, Fort Sill, OK, Baumholder, Germany, Fort Bliss, TX, Saudi Arabia (Operation Desert Storm/ Desert Shield). During his career he earned several medals and ribbons to include: Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation, Army Achievement, Vietnam Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge and Parachutist Badge. He is survived by his spouse of 46 years, Mamie, their three sons, SSG Darrel Wardell (Dana), Daltrin Wardell (Monique) and Deon Wardell (Dawn), 12 grandchildren and his brothers, Harvey Wardell, Welton Wardell and Rosevelt Wardell. Visitation will be from 10:30am to 1:30pm on Friday, January 27, 2017 at Sunset Funeral Home Northeast.
