Richard Salas, born on September 5, 1939 peacefully went to the Lord on August 31, 2008, surrounded by his wife, children, grandchildren and loved ones. He also was a proud grandfather of Matthew Diego Monarrez, Joshua Noel Monarrez, Kaeyln Tyler Monarrez, Kiana Fey Salas, and Richard Ryan Salas. At age seventeen, he joined the U.S. Army and served his country in the Vietnam War and Korean War. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; Vietnam Service Medal with the Silver Star, and 2 Bronze Service Stars. He retired from the military after 23 years of service. He continued to serve his country by working at Fort Bliss Bldg. 500, until retiring 6 years ago. He stayed busy during his retirement years with his grandchildren, encouraging them to be proud of themselves in whatever they decided to do in life. He was a wonderful husband, and a great Dad. The moment the first child was born, he said, “My boy’s going to college!” He always encouraged us, even when we made mistakes. We will always miss his laugh and sense of humor. We love you and miss you always. Visitation from 5:00 to 7:00 pm and Vigil at 6:00 pm on Thursday, September 4, 2008 at Sunset Funeral Homes-Northeast.
