On March 18, 2018, Retried E7 Richard McDowell left this world to serve duty in heaven as a guardian of his faith to the eternal father. He was born in Lexington, KY on September 3, 1930 to parent, John and Mary Alice McDowell.
In 1948, he enlisted in the US Army and served during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam earning a Bronze Medal and Purple Heart. He married Susie McDowell in 1975. Deacon McDowell was a faithful member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church for over 43 years. He served as a chairman of the Deacon board. After retiring, he pursued a degree in education (BS) at UTEP, and taught for 12 years in El Paso school systems.
His memory will be forever cherished by his sisters: Florence (Robert) Shy, Chicago, IL; Alice Williams, Cincinnati OH; daughter, Joyce (Wesley) Maxie, Cincinnati, OH; adopted daughter, Eva Monete McDowell, Phoenix, AZ; step-children, Betty Bailey, Houston, TX, Freddie Stevens, El Paso, Donnie Steven, Los Angeles, CA, Tommie Stevens, El Paso; special nephew, Louis (Ruth) McDowell. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren (great and great great), nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives. He was preceded in death by his spouse, parents and 14 siblings.
Visitation: 5:00pm-9:00pm with Masonic Honors at 6:00pm, Thursday, April 05, 2018 at Sunset Funeral Home-Northeast. Funeral Service: 11:30am, Friday, April 06, 2018 at Mount Zion Baptist Church. Committal Service: 1:00pm, Fort Bliss National Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
