Richard John Harmon
We celebrate a life well lived as we say goodbye to Father and Grandpa Richard J. Harmon, who passed away September 26, 2017. He will be sorely missed, but he leaves behind a lasting legacy.
Richard was born August 21, 1921 in Rimer Hill, PA, the son of William Henry Harmon and Anna Margareta Gifford Harmon. Growing up in a rural community outside of Pittsburgh during the Great Depression, Richard nevertheless had a happy childhood and often talked of his exploits, explorations and childhood mischief.
He proudly served our military for nearly 30 years, enlisting in the U.S. Army at a young age, ultimately obtaining the rank of First Sergeant. He was a decorated WWII veteran, participating in numerous conflicts and missions. Following the war, he returned to Fort Bliss in Army Artillery Defense. He was involved in the Korean conflict, and was deployed to Florida during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He had a tremendous amount of experiences, and would share entertaining war stories, including about General Patton coming into his tent with pearl handled pistols in Germany. In addition to Europe, he was deployed in numerous other countries including Japan and Greenland.
Richard was predeceased by his loving wife of 61 years, Josephine Hicks Harmon in 2013. Siblings predeceasing him were brothers William Henry Harmon, Franklin Leroy Harmon, and sister Eleanor June Harmon.
