Richard H. Barrera, 89, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2021. Richard was born in Kent, TX and raised in Van Horn, TX. He graduated From Van Horn High School where he played 6-man football. He proudly served in the U.S. Air force and traveled across Europe. He graduated from Texas Western University (UTEP) in 1966 and worked in education throughout his career. He was a Teacher and Coach at Jones, Guillen and Bowie and an Educational Resource Coordinator at Region 19.
Richard was married to his beloved Alicia Gutierrez in 1958 and they spent their lives together raising their family. He loved sports and was a loyal Cowboys fan. He enjoyed tinkering with anything that needed repair, gardening and being home. He was a great cook and skilled poker player. He dedicated his life to Jesus and was a faithful servant of the Lord.
Richard was proceeded in death by his parents; Martin and Carmen Barrera and his loving wife Alicia. He is survived by his children Richard (Lourda), Yoliette (Humberto), Steven (Georgina) and Melissa (Omar). Grandchildren; Jessica (John), Steven (Mariely), Felicia, Diego, Jacqueline, Marco, Sofia and Joseph Cobos. Great Grandchildren; Jacqueline, Jack, Jordan and Joseph.
We are eternally grateful and wish to thank our caregivers Josefina and Olivia for their love and dedication. With thanks to Gloria Yanez, for prayer and communion visits.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM with a Rosary at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, May 19, 2021 at Sunset Funeral Homes-East, 750 N. Carolina. Funeral Mass will be held at 9:00 AM on Thursday, May 20, 2021 at St. Pius X Catholic Church 1050 N. Clark. Interment will follow at 10:30 AM at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with Military Honors.
