Ricardo Granillo Duran, aged 81, passed away in El Paso, Texas on June 25th, 2024. He was born on April 3rd, 1943, to Telesforo and Julia (Granillo) Duran, in El Paso. He grew up in Ysleta, Texas, along with his seven brothers and sisters, and attended Ysleta High School. He obtained his associate’s degree from El Paso Community College. He married Dolores Lopez on November 29th, 1969, at the Old Mission Church in Ysleta, Texas.
Ricardo, known as Richie, moved to Midland in the late 1970’s to follow the oil boom. He would work with Bond Coat Oil Company until the mid-1980’s. It was at this time that our family moved to an area just outside of Midland called Greenwood. Our family would call this our forever home as lifelong friendships were made, and all his children would finish their schooling. Before retiring, he worked at Midland Reporter Telegram, where he enjoyed night drives in neighboring towns outside of Midland.
He moved back to El Paso in 2009. He enjoyed drinking coffee with his sisters and spending time with his family. He took great pride in making his salsa and would share it with all who visited him. He had a love for knowledge and would regularly watch documentaries on animals and war. Those who knew him knew that he always had a good story to share and loved to make people laugh. He loved all of his grandchildren, and especially doted on the two youngest, Sammy and Aibileen, who were the light of his life.
We know he is now resting peacefully with our Heavenly Father. His faith in the Lord was unwavering. He was always ready to share the word and asked all to always pray for their children. His legacy will continue, as the love he gave will always live in our hearts.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dolores Duran, on September 16th, 2014. He was also preceded by his parents, Telesforo and Julia, along with his siblings: Elias Trujillo, Francisco Duran, Bernardo Duran, Enriqueta Trujillo, Costancia Tellez, and Ramona Duran Solis.
Ricardo is survived by his sister Elvira Morales, and his loving children: his son Ricardo L. Duran Jr. and wife JoAnn Duran, his son Roberto Duran and wife Fancy Duran, his daughter Linda (Duran) Trujillo and husband Bryan Trujillo, and his daughter Maria Elena Duran. He leaves behind 12 grandchildren: Michael Duran, Katherine Riley, Faith Duran, Hope Duran, Bubba Porter, Antonio Duran, Robby Duran, Grace Duran, Joshua Trujillo, Ethan Trujillo, Matthew Trujillo, and Samuel Trujillo. He was also blessed to leave behind 5 great grandchildren: Evan Duran, Alex Tagle, Caleb Duran, Aibileen Riley, and Laura Porter.
A special acknowledgement goes to Maria Elena Duran. As Ricardo’s youngest daughter, she was also his primary caretaker. Our father was so grateful for the love and attention she gave daily. Some of his favorite things were their drives to go grab ice cream or pina’s from a local stand. His last years were wonderful due to the kind and selfless nature she exhibited every day. We thank her profusely for being a loyal and faithful daughter and friend ‘til the very end.
