Retired Lt. Colonel Henry George Leu passed away on November 28, 2008 at Monte Vista. He was born in Newark, New Jersey on March 11, 1917 to Henry James Michael Leu and Florence Gracie.
As an army officer, Henry served his country with honor. During Word War II, he served under General Patton and fought in the Battle of the Bulge, which was the longest land battle in which the US participated. Winning his battle was crucial to winning the war. In Henry’s bible, he kept the letter General Patton gave to each soldier under his command, expressing confidence in their courage, their skill in battle, and their devotion to duty. After the war, Henry participated in Operation BUSTER-JANGLE. This was a series of seven nuclear weapons tests conducted by the United States in 1951 at the Nevada Test Site. He also served in the Korean War.
Among the military metals awarded, Henry received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, American Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Army Occupational medal (Germany), Korean Service Medal, and RCK Presidential Unit Citation.
Following a distinguished military career, he became a government civil servant. Henry was an active member of the El Paso Maida Shriners. He retired in El Paso in 1983 with his beloved wife June Leu, who preceded him in death. As his soul mate June would say to him, “So Mr. Leu, my hat’s off to you and I love you.”
