Reba Marie Hughes

June 19, 1932 — May 15, 2021

Reba Marie (Livingston) Hughes, 88, passed away peacefully on the afternoon of Saturday, May 15, 2021. A proud daughter of Missouri, Reba was born to Bertha M. (Edwards) and John C. Livingston in June of 1932. In her youth, she worked in a Pepsi Cola bottling company outside Springfield. In 1951 at the age of 19, she joined the Women’s Army Corps achieving the rank of Private First Class before being Honorably Discharged in 1953. It was during that time she met her future husband, Philip B. Hughes. The two of them corresponded and grew closer in the years after Reba left the service and on November 28th of 1958, they were married. Together they travelled the world while Phil was in the Army and started their family, living in: Colorado Springs, Indianapolis, Orleans, France, Kaiserslautern and Mannheim, Germany. When it came time for Phil to retire and after years of being stationed in places with cold weather and snow, her only request was that they settle in an area that was warm. Northeast El Paso, Texas would become their home for the next forty years. Reba will be remembered for her piercing hazel eyes and always having a dog at her feet. She never learned to drive, rarely drank, but loved to watch golf on Sundays, especially Phil Mickelson, her favorite. It was always a treat when she fried chicken and holidays were marked with homemade potato soup. She is preceded in death by her parents, namesake Aunt Reba Baumberger, beloved husband Philip and numerous pets. She is survived by her four children Scott E. Hughes, Harold W. Hughes (Patricia), Philip B. Hughes Jr. (Vicki), and Rebecca Hall (Andrew); and by her four grandchildren, Elissa & Evan A. Hughes, Philip B. Hughes III and Emily Hall. The family of Reba Hughes would like to thank the staff and nurses at Good Samaritan Society - White Acres Senior Living Center for their care and patience. Visitation will be held Friday, May 28, 2021, at 8:30 a.m. with a Celebration of Life Service at 9 a.m. at Sunset Funeral Home – West, 480 N. Resler Dr., El Paso, TX. She will then be laid to rest with her husband at Fort Bliss National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Humane Society of El Paso in Reba’s honor.
