Ramon C. Martinez, 87, passed away in his sleep on November 22nd, 2012. He was preceded in death by his parents Julian and Nicolasa Martinez. He is survived by his wife of 61 years Irma Terrazas, his son David Martinez, his daughters Lucy Martinez, Vannie Martinez, Sandra Martinez, and his grandchildren Danielle Valles, Diane Martinez and Robert Martinez. He was born in El Paso, Texas, a member of a family of eight, brothers Cruz and Raul and sisters Celia, Carol, Gen, Margie, and JoAnne. He grew up in El Paso for 9 years and in Las Cruces for 8 years.
He fought in Italy for four years during WWII in the 88th Army Division including one year as a military policeman. Upon his return, he studied civil engineering and graduated from NMSU in 1950. He was a registered professional engineer and land surveyor. After graduation, he worked in Panama, Central America, and then continued to Bolivia to work in the Altiplano, South America, in a bilateral agreement between the United States and the Bolivian General Commander of the Geodetic Military. He was married in La Paz, Bolivia, in 1951. He and Irma in 1956 went to Maracaibo, Venezuela, to establish Mercator, an engineering company. They decided to return to El Paso in 1978.
He worked as VP of Engineering at SLI, Inc. He rose to be an expert witness in Hydrology. He was a designer for the renovation of the runway for El Paso airport. He formed a consulting firm Nomar Engineering. He continued his engineering consulting business until the day of his death.
He was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer. He won many golf tournaments in Maracaibo, Venezuela. He enjoyed all these sports all around South America, New Mexico, Texas and Colorado.
Visitation will be held Monday, November 26, 2012 from 2:00-2:45 pm at Sunset Funeral Homes-West. Funeral Mass will be at 3:00 pm on Monday, November, 26, 2012 at St. Jude Catholic Church. Services entrusted to Sunset Funeral Home-West.
