On the Saturday of January 16, 2021, Rachel Santana Chavez, aka “Rocky,” passed away in her bed while her children held her and kept her warm. With her last breath, her soul could be heard whispering “Take care of each other” to her two remaining sisters, five children, sixteen grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren as she was welcomed into Heaven by the love of her life Ramon and her daughter Edna.
Rachel Santana Chavez, was born on the 10th of May in 1941 in El Paso, Texas to Trinidad Santa Anna Sr. and Esperanza Sierra Santa Anna. She was the fourth in a family of five siblings. In 1960, she graduated from Bowie High School and began a beautiful family of two compassionate daughters and four affectionate sons with her high school sweetheart Ramon “Pelon” Chavez. Together they always filled their home with laughter and memories. Being the matriarch of many talents, Rachel maintained a career of bookkeeping and accounting which lead to handling the finances for her sons’ businesses for over 20 years. Once her children were grown and out of the house, she opened her doors to their children to give them their first jobs of counting checks or helping her cook in the kitchen. As she was fighting her own battles, especially with her health, she went out of her way to provide a guiding hand to all those who came in and out of her life. This was also the case with her great-grandchildren who she taught, now more than ever, to face the world without fear.
