Phyllis Rae Appleton Phillips Thurmond

Phyllis Rae Appleton Phillips Thurmond,85, passed away on Thursday, April 26, 2012. She is proceeded in death by her parents; Myron S. and Priscilla Warren Appleton, husband; William Arthur Phillips, Jr., husband; Ralph Thurmond, brother; Clayton Appleton, and sister; Betty Worsham. Phyllis is survived by son; Randal Phillips (wife Vicky), daughters; Shelley Phillips Weaver and Valerie Phillips Steele (husband Harold), longtime partner; Walter King, grandchildren; Honey Borrego, Jacob Borrego, and Cory Phillips, and great-grandchild; Sophia Groff. She graduated from El Paso High School and went on to receive a BS in Education from the Texas Western College. Phyllis also obtained a Masters Degree and Librarian Certification from UTEP. She worked as a teacher and librarian for the Ysleta ISD and El Paso ISD for 35 years. Phyllis exhibited a great joy for life and enjoyed theatre, dancing, traveling, hiking, reading, and dining. Visitation will be held from 4pm - 7pm on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at Sunset Funeral Home - East, 750 N Carolina Dive. Graveside service will be said on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at 10:30 am at Fort Bliss National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the United Way or charity of your choice.
