Philip Alpern

December 11, 1914 — August 10, 2011

Philip Alpern 12/11/14 – 08/10/11 Philip Alpern, best known for his wonderful sense of humor passed away on August 10, 2011 at the age of 96. Born on December 11, 1914 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he lived a very fulfilling life. With a great attitude and work ethic, Phil has worked in sales and served in the Navy during World War II. Phil was very lucky to have met the love of his life in his early 20s and spent over 70 years married to Rene. While in Pittsburgh, the avid sports fan celebrated many championships of his favorite teams: The Pirates and The Steelers. El Paso, Texas became a new home for “Poppa” (as he was affectionately called) in the 1970s and the warm climate and love of his growing family and friends made him feel very comfortable. Phil took up golf to play with his son, Louis, and became quite a competent golfer himself. Phil shot a hole in one at the age of 90 and was given a trophy to prove it! People will remember him for his affable personality, his kindness and above all for his jokes. He told them to his family, the folks at Albertson’s, his doctors and to his wonderful friends at Monte Vista. He was a very generous man. He served as Treasurer at Monte Vista for 12 years until earlier this year and enthusiastically urged Monte Vista residents to contribute to an Employee Appreciation Fund to thank the hourly staff for all their hard work. He was very kind to everyone that knew him and a person who only spent a minute with him, would leave with a smile on his/her face. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and his family and friends will miss him dearly. Phil was preceded in death by his loving wife, Rene. He is survived by daughter, Sara Alpern Tarlow, and her husband Peter Tarlow and Sara’s son, Joshua Frager and by son, Louis Alpern and his wife Laura Alpern and their children Samara Alpern, Noah Alpern and Alana Alpern Brown and her husband Adam Brown. A special thank you to Dr. Luis Guerra, M.D. and his staff and Magdalene Allen and her stuff at Always Caring. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to El Paso Country Day School (220 E. Cliff, El Paso, Texas 79902) or Alzheimer’s Association (4687 N. Mesa St., Suite 200, El Paso, Texas 79912). Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 am, Sunday, August 14, 2011 at Temple Mt. Sinai Cemetery. Services entrusted to Sunset Funeral Home-West. Please visit our online register book at www.sunsetfuneralhomes.net.
