Pedro Castañon

October 27, 1928 — December 24, 2020

On Thursday December 24, 2020 Pedro (Pete) Castañon Jr. 92, beloved husband, loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great great-grandfather passed away peacefully of natural causes in his home to be with our Lord Jesus Christ. Born in El Paso (Smeltertown) Texas on October 27th 1928. Pete worked for a short time at Lone Star Motor Company. At his young age of 17, he entered the United States Naval Service, served on the USS Andromeda (AKA-15). He separated from the Navy, September 1949 and was awarded the WWII Victory Metal. Immediately after his service he worked for El Paso Brick Company. Met the love of his life Elena Margarita Vasquez, were married November 1950, both who just recently celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary. Mr. Pedro Castañon Jr. was a lifetime volunteer at “Sierra De Cristo Rey” and instilled this passion in his sons to continue the tradition. His favorite American pastime sport was softball. One of Pete’s proudest moment was manager of “Rosa’s Cantina Baseball Team” in which they won the League Championship. Pete began his career with the United States Postal Service and retired May 1987 receiving an Honorable 38 years of Service Award. Preceded in death by his Father Pedro Sr. and Mother Evarista, sisters Consuelo Hererra, Beatrice Bustillos and Maria Gonzalez. Pete is survived by his 9 sons and 6 daughters. Lourdes Nick (Belinda), Pedro III (Rita), Tony, Luis (Margie), Terri Sandoval, Estela C Amaya (Raul), Carlos (Imelda), Berta Sano (Martin), Lola Pontillo (Frank), Sukie Medina (Kenneth), Sally C Gutierrez, Jerry Sr. (Anna Lisa), Felix (Norma), David, Mario (Maribel). Pete has been blessed with 41 Grand Children, 42 Great-Grand Children and 5 Great Great-Grand Children. Services will be at 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM (MST) Friday January 08, 2021 at Sunset Funeral Home-East, 750 N. Carolina Dr. Rosary at 10:00 AM for immediate family only. Due to COVID, there will be no Mass of the Resurrection. Private burial will follow at 1:00 PM at Fort Bliss National Cemetery, 5200 Fred Wilson Ave. El Paso Texas, for the deceased children only.
