Alicia Villegas

Paulina Alicia Villegas was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, neighbor, and friend. She was called to heaven on June 20, 2023 at the age of 95.

Alicia “Licha” was born to Cruz Ruiz and Maria de Jesus Muniz on June 29, 1927 in El Paso, TX. Her light and strong energy were positive reflections of El Paso’s nickname, the Sun City, as she was a ray of sunshine to everyone she knew.

After meeting her late husband, Julio Villegas, they had 3 children: Jaime, Luis, and Norma. Her family grew when she became a grandmother of 8 and a great grandmother of 10.

Alicia was not afraid of hard work, working in a variety of places from a marshmallow factory in her teens to Montgomery Ward when she was a grandmother. She gravitated towards social interactions with friends and strangers alike and excelled in any job.

Alicia also loved spending time in the kitchen, creating delicious meals for her family. Her family would wrestle for the last of her sopita and chocolate cake. She also found so much joy in going to community centers to dance the night away with her friends, well into her 80s. She was a great storyteller of her life’s experiences teaching her grandchildren to enjoy life, work hard, and laugh through it all. Family was her deepest love and she will be missed by all.

To pay your last respects to Alicia, the visitation will be from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM with a Vigil/Rosary at 6:00 PM, Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at Sunset Funeral Homes- East, 750 N. Carolina. Funeral Mass will be held on Alicia’s birthday as a celebration of life at 9:30 AM, Thursday, June 29, 2023, at St. Raphael Catholic Church, 2301 Zanzibar. Graveside Service will follow at 11:00 AM at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery.
