Paul Keith Mooney, age 52 of El Paso, TX, was born on June 21, 1968 in Long Beach, CA to Rodolfo Gonzalez and Sandra K. Mooney. He is survived by his sons, Rickey D. (Tadina) Hunter, Eric Marquez, Anthony Mooney, Lisandro Mooney, Russell Mooney, Jace Mooney and his daughter, Isabella Mooney. He is also survived his brother, Damon (Melissa) McMillan, his sister, Summer Mooney, and cousins Robert Penland and Bobby Pearson. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Amaya Hunter, Mila Hunter, Rylee Hunter, Alishae Marquez, Ian Marquez and Oliver Mooney.
Paul Mooney joined the U.S. Army in 1986 out of Little Rock, AR. He served as an Infantryman and later reclassified to Patriot Missile System Operator/Maintainer. He proudly served his country for 21 years and retired with the rank of 1SG (First Sergeant). His many assignments include Ft. Benning, GA, Ft. Bliss, TX, Ft. Hood, TX, and UTEP ROTC, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Kuwait, Iraq, and South Korea. During his long career, he served in the following combat operations - Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom. During his successful military career, Paul Mooney received many awards and commendations and was a well-decorated serviceman. His awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (2nd Award), Army Commendation Medal (4th Award), Army Achievement Medal (6th Award), Presidential Unit Citation, Valorous Unit Award, Army Superior Unit Award, Army Good Conduct Medal (7th Award), National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (3rd Award), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (3rd Award), and the Expert Infantry Badge.
After his service with the U.S. Army, Paul Mooney continued in public service and joined the ranks within the Texas Department of Public Safety where he graduated from the academy in 2008 as part of the A-08 Recruit Class. Paul became a commissioned Texas Highway Patrol Trooper on September 26, 2008. Paul’s first duty station was in El Paso where he served until 2013, In 2013, he transferred to Mineral Wells and in 2014 transferred to Waxahachie. In 2015, Paul promoted to Sergeant and was stationed in Hurst where he remained until 2018. It was then that Paul returned to El Paso and served the Department in the role of the Regional Recruiter. He was a devoted member of the Texas Department of Public Safety for 13 years.
Paul enjoyed dancing to country music, hunting, watching NASCAR races, working out but most importantly he really enjoyed spending time with his kids and strived to be the best dad possible to his children. Paul was a blessing to all who knew him, and he leaves the world a better place.
Visitation will be from 3:00 - 7:00 PM, with Funeral Service at 4:00 PM, Army Honors at 5:00 PM, and DPS/American Legion/Mason Honors at 5:30 PM, on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at Abundant Church West, 7100 Desert Blvd.
