Oscar F. Casavantes

Oscar F. Casavantes passed away February 14, 2011. A lifelong resident of El Paso, he was a former school teacher in the El Paso Independent School District and was retired U.S. Civil Service Employee from White Sands Missile Range, serving as the First Civilian Chief of Transportation, Property Branch. He was also the first civilian Records Administrator at Ft. Bliss. He served in the U. S. Navy. He was a co-owner of the original Magic Steam Carpet Cleaners Co. He attended El Paso High School and graduated from UTEP where he was named to Men of Mines, was a member of Kappa Delta Pi, an Honor Society in Education, Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity, UTEP Student Senate, and the Cornerstone Society at UTEP. He served as a member of advisory Boards at Our Lady’s Youth Center, St. Margaret’s Home for Children and the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine at Blessed Sacrament Church. He was a former assistant scoutmaster of Troop 283, adviser to Troop 12, and 4th Decree Knight of Columbus. He is survived by nephews, Daniel A. (Mari Carmen), Dr. Rene O. (Luz Elena), Rev. Carlos S. Jr., Dr. Michael D. (Linda) Casavantes, and nieces, Linda Licon, Velia (Jim) Eveler, Bonnie (Robert) Lund, Reva and Coquis Casavantes. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers, Carlos S. Sr. (Sister), Hector E. (Helen), Albert A., and Paul H. Casavantes. Visitation will be held from 6:30-8:00 pm, Thursday, February 17, 2011 at Sunset Funeral Home-West with a Rosary at 7:00 pm, Rev. Carlos S. Casavantes, Jr., officiating. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, February 18, 2011 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Interment to follow at Evergreen Alameda Cemetery. Pallbearers will be James Eveler, George Vargas, Michael D. Casavantes, Mark Casavantes, Former Mayor, Ray Salazar, and Dr. Rene O. Casavantes. The Family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the El Paso High School Library Fund or the Oscar F. Casavantes Endowed Scholarship Fund, 1100 N.
