Opal Rea Peacock Smith was born to James T. Peacock and Mamie Pearl Saulman Peacock on February 7, 1933 on the family farm in Geneva County, Alabama. She left this life to join her heavenly Father on September 28, 2022. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert A. Smith, her parents and her siblings, Harold Gene Peacock, Willa Pearl Peacock, Jimmy Ray Peacock and Millard Edward Peacock.
Opal met the love of her life, Robert “Bob” Smith, at a square dance at the USO at Ft. Rucker, Alabama where Bob was serving in the Army. Bob and Opal married on April 23, 1955. They lived in several states before putting down roots in El Paso in 1962. Opal was a dedicated Christian, a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, mother-in-law and friend. She was also known as a hardworking, well-respected businesswoman as she and daughter, Karen, ran the well-known Nita Jan Shoppe for many years. Her faith in God led her to use her talents and gifts to help others, impacting the lives of everyone who crossed her path. She will be greatly missed by her entire family and friends. Opal is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ronald Smith and Susanne Smith, her son and daughter-in-law, Richard Smith and Mara Smith, her daughter and son-in-law, Karen Longtin and Greg Longtin; 8 grandchildren: James Smith (Annika), Jeremy Smith (Hazel), Shawntae Smith, Amy Smith, Kristy Del Olmo (Ruben), Ashley Honargohar (Borzoo), Matthew Longtin (Tamara) and Sarah Ronquillo (Jesus) and 20 great grandchildren as well as her sister, Joan Knight, her brother, Billy Peacock (Kathy) and sister, Sarah Hatcher (Don) and numerous nephews and nieces.
Visitation will take place on Wednesday, October 5, 2022 from 5-7pm at Sunset Funeral Home, 750 North Carolina, El Paso, Texas 79915. A Celebration of Opal’s life will be held at 9am on Thursday, October 6, 2022 at Sunset Funeral Home led by Dr. Mark Rotramel of First Baptist Church of El Paso where Opal was a member. Interment to follow at 11:00am at Evergreen Cemetery East. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the First Baptist Church of El Paso Foundation.
