Montserrat "Monse" Lopez

Montserrat (Monse) Chavez Lopez, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away September 21, 2023, in El Paso, Texas at the age of 95. She is preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Gilbert Echaniz Lopez. She was born in El Paso, Texas in 1928 to Pedro (Pete)  Murillo Chavez and Conception (Concha) ( Sanchez) Chavez. Monse attended St. Joseph’s Academy, now Loretto Academy, and graduated at the age of 16 (sixteen). She then attended Texas College of Mines and Metallurgy where she played tennis, basketball, and volleyball, and she was a Golddigger.  Monse received her B.S. in Biology in 1949 when the school changed its name to Texas Western College. She then attended the University of Texas Medical School in Galveston and received her certification as a Medical Technologist.  Monse was registered with ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists), for 50 (fifty) years.  She practiced at Southwest General Hospital, then worked with private practice physicians, Dr. Byrne, Dr. Branch Craige, Sr., and Dr. Irvin J. Goldfarb. She was an avid bowler and loved her family.  She is survived by her daughters, Suzanne (Suzie) Schwitters,(Jim), Rozella Hernandez (Edward) of Austin, and Lynda Pouria (Albert) of Lubbock. Monse is also survived by 8 (eight) grandchildren, Kathleen (Kathy) Bartlett, (Jeremy) James Schwitters II (Dana), Valerie Presgraves (Joshua), Emily Hemphill (Rush), and John Hernandez and Ryan Pouria, Allison Bell (Brett), Stephen Pouria, also, 7 (seven) great-grandchildren, Madison, Vera and Kylie Schwitters of Sarasota, Florida, Juliana and Katelyn Bartlett of Leander, Texas and Liam and Harper Hemphill of Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Visitation will be held on Monday, October 9th at Sunset Funeral Home West, 480 N. Resler, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the rosary starting at 6:00 p.m. The funeral Mass will be held on October 10th at St. Mathews Catholic Church, 400 Sunset at 11:30 with the interment following at

Ft. Bliss National. Cemetery.
