Michael Lee Mata, 44, passed away Sunday, June 2, 2024.
Michael Lee was born in El Paso, TX on February 23, 1980. While attending school in his teen years, Michael was diagnosed with brain tumors redirecting the path of his life and making him proof of God’s miracles and grace. Though he was dealing with his medical issues, Michael completed his education and graduated from Riverside High School in 2002. After completing school, Michael participated with several local community centers making friendships and acquaintances that he cherished. He was a devoted Dallas Cowboys fan, enjoyed watching wrestling and action-packed movies. Michael fought his illness for over 25 years and overcame medical odds that medical professionals didn’t believe possible.
Michael Lee is preceded in death by his father, Michael Mata, maternal grandparents Fernando Ortega Sr. and Velia Ortega, paternal grandparents Marcelo and Marianna Mata. He leaves behind his mother Sally Mata, siblings; Jessica (Javier) Estrada, Fernie (Jennifer) Mata, Jennifer (Jesus) Arreola and Jackie (Mark) Rosales, 7 nephews and 4 nieces.
Michael Lee was blessed with several aunts and uncles within the Ortega and Mata families which supported him throughout his entire life and more specifically after his diagnosis. While Michael Lee loved each one of his family members, there are two people in particular whom need to be recognized: Michael Lee’s Godmother Sylvia Ortega-Zanella and Aunt Becky Ortega. Sylvia is the essence of a godmother and has fulfilled her commitment made at Michael Lee’s baptism and more. Becky has always been a call away ready to help wherever she could and never failed to bring a smile to Michael Lee’s face.
Lastly, Michael Lee was surrounded by some of the best medical professionals in El Paso, Dr. Omar, Dr. Salujah and Dr. Benson who never gave up and kept fighting alongside him. Particularly, Dr. Roberto Canales and caregiver Lucy King will forever hold a special place with the family.
