Mary Lillie Gabriel

Mary L. Gabriel passed away on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at the age of 81. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and will be deeply missed. Mary was born in Brownwood, Texas on October 3, 1935. She graduated from Brownwood High School and would later wed the love of her life in 1969, Joseph Gabriel. As a military wife, Mary traveled extensively but was always active at the military installations that she lived on. Besides reading and cooking, Mary LOVED roses and was former Vice President of the EI Paso Rose Society. She won numerous awards for the beautiful roses she grew. She was also an avid gardener and a faithful member of the EI Paso County Master Gardeners. Mary also cheerfully served as Elder for Northgate Christian Church for over 20 years. Preceded in death by her parents; George and Annie B. Johnson, her sons; Vernon Johnson and Phillip Scruggs, and daughter; Gayla Walker. She leaves behind her husband of 48 years, Joseph, sons; Michael Johnson and Maurice Scruggs-Bey, daughters; Michaele Bocknite, Dr. Phyllis Wilson and Sandra Scruggs, sisters; Ruth Ann Singleton and Julia Johnson, and a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Visitation: 5-9pm with prayer service at 7pm on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at Sunset Funeral Home Northeast, 4631 Hondo Pass. Funeral Service: 11:30am on Thursday, February 16, 2017 at Northgate Christian Church, 5430 Yvette. Committal Service: 1:30pm at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.
