Martha A. Garner

January 19, 1949 — July 4, 2020

Our beloved Martha Alice Garner, born January 19, 1949, aged 71, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2020. A resident of El Paso, Texas, she was the daughter of Jack Hunt, Sr. and Rubye Nelle Tarrence, who preceded her in death, as did her sister Shirley Jean Hunt, paternal sister Jacqueline Hunt Dukes, and her son Dexter Leander Gainer. She is survived by her soulmate of 39 years, Larry George Garner I, her son Reginald Neil Gainer and his wife Rhonda, daughter, Stephanie Denise Gainer, daughter, Precious Penni Hunt-Flake and her husband Frederick, and their seven children, son, Larry George Garner III and his significant other Ashley, and his five children, and also by her eldest son Dexter’s five children. She is also survived by siblings Reverend Wanda Waters and husband William, Jack Hunt, Jr., Hattie Todd and husband Ernest, Lynona Allen and husband Rodney, Michael Hunt, paternal siblings Kenneth Clayton, Patrice Adams and husband Ronnie, Donald Clayton and wife Dondi, as well as twelve great grandchildren, beloved nieces and nephews, other extended family members and many dear friends. Martha was known by many people in Florida and Texas, where she lived most her life. She was known as “Mot” by friends and family, “Ms. G or Mama G” by co-workers, “Mathee Alice” by siblings, “Grammie or Granny” by her beloved grandchildren, and just “Moma” by her children. Mot was born and raised in Panama City, Fl., where she was raised by loving parents of which she lost at early ages in their lives. She often spoke of the love and special bond she had with her maternal grandmother. She would tell stories about her that reminded her of her own relationships with her grandchildren. She graduated from Rosenwald High school in 1967. Shortly after graduating, she married her high school sweetheart David L. Gainer and she conceived the first 3 of her 5 children with him. Unfortunately, her first marriage ended, however, amicably and they remained friends unto her passing. She eventually married her soulmate, Larry G. Garner I on September 11, 1981, and she had 2 more children. She was an Army wife which allowed her to travel and live in several states of the US as well as countries like Panama and Germany. During this time, she worked for AAFES where she acquired an Associate’s degree in Business Management. Here she made lasting friendships, adoptive family members, and impressionable relationships. She was hard-working and an excellent example of supreme leadership. A co-worker and “adoptive” daughter said, “Ms. G had an amazing kindness and generosity. She was inspirational and motivating and pushed you to be a better you for your future. And Ms. G didn’t take no mess! She was a leader you wanted to follow. She did it all with a smile, a laugh and a no nonsense look on her face. She was a God send.” Mot was an avid sports fan, football in particular, she loved the Dallas Cowboys. She almost always had on a Cowboys Star to represent “Her Boys’”. When she was watching them, she would be so animated, jumping, shouting, cheering and willing them vigorously into an INT or TD. It was an amazing and highly entertaining sight to see. Mot had a fondness for elephants and she collected many and all manners of figurines, pictures and clothing in regards to them. She said they were a sign of good luck, especially with their trunks pointed towards the heavens. She would call them “Ephalents” ever since her granddaughter, Zoriah, pronounced it that way. Mot loved her family unconditionally and tremendously. She was proud of her children. She loved and respected each individually and as a unit. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, they had a very special place in her heart. Only her heart could hold that much love for so many. She loved playing with them on the floor of her living room surrounded by toys and tea cups, loved receiving messages and talking to them on the phone, loved making up silly little songs to sing and dance to with them, and she loved rocking them in her lap no matter their size. Mot was diagnosed with and had been suffering from Multiple Myeloma for almost 10 years. The disease put insurmountable pain on her body and over the years she became weaker without showing it physically. That was her strength, standing when the devil tried to keep her down. She stayed strong during this hardship and she did not allow her family to see the depth of her pain and struggle. In everything she did, God and her family came first, she never focused on herself. A true, selfless and amazing woman who was the kindest, most generous, loving soul. She was silly and hilarious. She was genuinely beautiful beyond measure inside and out. An angel sent from God with a ready smile and contagious laugh, a shining example of God’s gracious love. We are most grateful for the love and support of her dear friends whom she considered family. A Celebration of Life Memorial will be held at Sunset Funeral Home, 4631 Hondo Pass Dr, El Paso, Tx on Monday July 20, 2020 at 12 pm for immediate and close family. The family cannot express enough how much we will miss our “Mot, Moma, Grammie”. But we know she led a blessed and wonderful life and we will continue to celebrate her life and legacy in all that we do. We pray, as she enters the Kingdom and greets her family and friends, that she will be in the greatest Peace with our Heavenly Father. May the Peace, which surpasses all understandings, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and may the blessings of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be with you, and remain with you, always.
