Marjorie Moore Martin

August 31, 1915 — April 25, 2017

Marjorie Moore Martin, 101, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2017. Born in Maury City near Memphis, TN, August 1915, she was the daughter of Hermon B. and Winnie Sutton Moore. She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, John Dennis Martin, M.D. and by her brother, Max W. Moore and sister-in-law, Mae Moore. She is survived by her daughters, Marjorie Lynn and Sharon Owen (Dale), grandchildren John Philpott (Kim), Shanna Heilveil (Ben), Tamara Golden (Chris), Margaret Currier (Ben), Nathan Owen, and great-grandchildren, Erin, Noah, and Megan Heilveil, Cailie and Brenna Golden, and Owen Currier, several nieces and cousins. Marjorie graduated from Austin High School in 1933 and attended Texas College of Mines, now UTEP, where she was a charter member of the Golddiggers. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church since 1927 and Faith Bible Class. Marjorie served terms as president of El Paso County Medical Society Auxiliary (now Alliance), and of Chapter AO of PEO Sisterhood, to which she belonged for over 75 years. She also was active in the El Paso Woman's Club, PTA and Girl Scouts leadership. She and her husband enjoyed social dancing as well as traveling across the U.S. and internationally. Marjorie took pleasure in her book review club and bridge groups, and painting on canvas, china, and figurines, and knitting sweaters with complex patterns. In later years, at Memorial Park Senior Center, she took up square dancing and country line dancing. She loved music, playing piano all her life. Devoted to her family, Marjorie was an exemplary wife, mother and fun grandmother (Nana). Her gracious friendliness, thoughtfulness, and care, as well as her sense of humor, fortitude, and quiet courage touched all who knew her. Special thanks to Dania, Teresa, and staff of Golden Park Home and Willie, Dr. Reeves, and Yazmin of Hospice El Paso. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the El Paso Community Foundation designating the Dr. John D. Martin Fund for the Treatment and Prevention of Blindness at P.O.
