Marjorie Fife Hines was born Nov. 9, 1920, in Logan, Utah, to Florence Williams Fife and Arthur Root Fife. In her early years in Utah and later in New Mexico she developed a deep appreciation for nature, hiking and camping with her father and her four brothers. She also learned to play the cello.
After the Fifes moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, Marjorie earned a B.A. from the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque. There she met Jack Dempsey Hines, her husband
of 72 years. Together they reared three children, Kathe, Stephen and Daniel in Houston, Austin and Lamesa, Texas.
While living in Austin Marjorie continued her music studies. She was an accomplished cellist and played with the Austin Symphony. In Houston, she earned her teaching credential. She taught both elementary and high school for nearly forty years.
Marjorie loved teaching. While teaching Spanish at Lamesa High School she began a series of adventuresome bus trips to Mexico with her Spanish students. She inspired her students to go to college when they had not been planning to continue their education. She herself returned to school and earned her M.A. in Spanish Language and Literature from Texas Technological University in Lubbock, Texas.
Marjorie was always eager for travel and adventure. She sailed on a freighter down the coast of South America. She and Jack took their grandchildren on adventures in the western United States. After they retired Marge and Jack spent eighteen years dividing their time between San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, and El Paso, Texas.
Marjorie is survived by her children, Kathe, Stephen (Ana) and Daniel Hines; her grandchildren, Kurt (Amanda), Andrew Hines Peralta (Shannon McCrann), Stefi Peralta Porter (Izach) and Justin; and her great grandchildren, Braden, Bennett, Jack, Ahton, Caiden, Luke and Arden Rose.
Her children and grandchildren thank her for engendering in them these things which have enriched their lives: a love for learning, the joy of being outdoors, and the desire to make music and art. She will be greatly missed. Services entrusted to Sunset Funeral Home – West.
