Maria Socorro Sloat, 82 of Northeast El Paso, passed away on April 10, 2012 at Sierra Medical Center. Socorro was born in Zacatecas, Mexico, on June 21, 1929. Always active in the community, Socorro was an avid volunteer at the Hilos De Plata Senior Citizens Center until she was unable due to Alzheimer’s disease. She is preceded by her husband Earl Sloat, and her brothers Francisco Garcia, and Juan Garcia. She is survived by her daughter Rebeca Scillieri and son in law Kenneth Scillieri of El Paso, Texas. Ever the loving grandmother, she is survived by her two grandchildren and their spouses; George Scillieri and his wife Liza Scillieri and by Kenneth Scillieri and his wife Candace Scillieri. Socorro had the profuse joy of being the great-grandmother to Gianna, Lucia, Vincente and Cristiana. She is also survived by her sister Maria Lupe Garcia and her niece Rebeca Urquide. Socorro was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and aunt. She touched so many lives in a loving positive way and will be greatly missed. Socorro took pleasure in gardening, games of luck and skill, and her adopted pet dachshund Max. Socorro was an enthusiastic world traveler who visited many parts of the United States, Mexico, Central America, and Europe. Socorro will always be remembered for her caring devotion and love to both her friends and family. The Scillieri family welcomes friends and loved ones to celebrate Socorro’s life during a funeral service held 6:00pm on Sunday, 15 April at the Sunset Funeral Home on Hondo Pass. There will be a viewing on Sunday starting at 5:00pm until 9:00pm. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association www.alz.org in memory of Maria Socorro Sloat.
