Maria Aurelia (Guera) Barragán, born November 12, 1942, passed away at the age of 78 surrounded by her loving family on Easter Sunday, April 4, 2021.
She is preceded in death by her parents Gonzalo and Carlota Pacheco, her sister Trinidad Marquez, and her brother Lucio Pacheco.
Her surviving siblings Manuel Pacheco, Esther Quintero, Gonzalo Pacheco Jr., their families, along with immediate family, will be honoring Aurelia at the upcoming services and mass.
Aurelia’s legacy endures through her devoted husband of 58 years, Jorge Armando Barragán, and their six children: Jorge (Shelley), Armando (Germaine), Samuel, Graciela Schmitt (Phillip) Elsa Singh (Raj), and Mario (Marcia) — all of whom she loved deeply and unconditionally.
Aurelia’s eleven grandchildren were the light and joy of her life, and they will forever cherish the precious moments lived in the familiar and comforting presence of their beloved “Ita” and “Ma”.
Aurelia’s six great grandchildren sparked such abundant joy in the twilight of her final years. Their tiny hearts are forever filled with the bright memories of her smiles, laughter, and gracious spirit.
As a devoted servant of Christ and pillar in her community, Aurelia served in various ministries at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church for over 45 years, including the Spanish choir. She also earned an Honorary Life Membership in the Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers in recognition of distinguished service given to children and youth. In addition to her lifelong devotion to her community, she built over the span of her lifetime a well-known reputation for steady hands in the skilled arts of tailoring and cake decorating. Her styled garments and intricate cakes were featured in many local wedding, birthday, anniversary, and quinceañera events in and around the northeast area of El Paso for many years.
Among many of Aurelia’s delights, she treasured traveling alongside her family. She frequented the beaches of southern California, the deserts of Arizona, the cityscapes of Manhattan, the blue skies of North Carolina, and the rolling hills of Tennessee. Aurelia enjoyed her visits to the exotic India and the sight of the Himalayas, which cultivated new cultural and familial experiences in the company of her beloved husband, children, and grandchildren.
Aurelia was the illuminating center of her family, friends, faith and local community and will be forever missed.
Aurelia’s life will be celebrated at Sunset Funeral Home (Northeast) on Monday, April 12 between 1-4pm with a rosary to be recited at 2pm. A mass will follow at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church Tuesday, April 13 at 10am.
Aurelia will be laid to final rest at Fort Bliss National Cemetery in an intimate and closed ceremony with her immediate family.
