Margie Helen Cassias Howes, a past president of the Women’s Club of El Paso, three time past president of P.E.O. Chapter M, El Paso, and Treasurer and Board member of the Rescue Mission of El Paso, passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2009, in Las Cruces, New Mexico. She was 87 years old.
One of three children, she was born in Fort Worth, Texas to Clifford and Julia Shook. She was a 1938 graduate of North Side High School in Fort Worth at age 16.
In 1943, while working at Texas Steel Manufacturing Company in Fort Worth, she met and married Clarence E. Cassias, United States Army. The couple was subsequently stationed at a number of Army posts in the United States, Germany, and Japan, as they reared their four children. Margie was active in many Officers’ Wives’ Clubs and was president of the Officers’ Wives’ Club in Stuttgart, Germany and Fort Bliss. They retired in El Paso in 1969, and in her later years, she enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, sewing and participating in a variety of civic and charitable organizations, primarily at the local P.E.O. chapter, the El Paso Woman’s Club, and the Rescue Mission of El Paso. Lieutenant Colonel (Ret) Clarence E. Cassias preceded her in death in 1981.
In 1999 she married Lieutenant Colonel (Ret) Robert A. Howes and moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico, where she lived until her death.
In addition to her husband of ten years, survivors include her daughter, Sherry Moody, of Tucson, Arizona; three sons, Timothy Cassias of Big Pine Key, Florida; Gregory Cassias, of Brookline, New Hampshire; and Rear Admiral (Ret) Jeffrey Cassias of Silverdale, Washington. She is also survived by six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at the Fort Bliss Center Chapel One at 1:00 p.m., Friday, May 8, 2009. Interment will be at Fort Bliss National Cemetery following the service.
