Margareta Elisabeta Ekstrand

October 3, 1924 — November 28, 2012

Margareta M. Hinkel-Ekstrand, “Oma,” 88, passed away on November 28, 2012. She was the widow of Gerald A. Ekstrand. Their children: Therese (husband Bo), Katherine (husband James), David and Christina. Grandchildren: Melissa (husband Walter), Cory (wife Robin), Christopher, Shelbi, Tiffany, Kassi, Karina and Shawn (wife Amber). Great-grandchildren: Nina (husband Gerrod), Julie (Ryan) and Steven. Great-great-grandchildren: Layla, Laylanie and Alex. Her parents were Karl and Hedwig Hinkel. Her dear family, in Germany, included Klaus, Karl Heinz, Josie, Klaus Jr. & wife, Rochus & wife and Paul Thomas. Ms. Margareta Ekstrand was one of a kind and cared for her family as well as many others. She was a nurse, an independent business woman in Germany, an NCO bartender and was also recognized by General Omar Bradley. Her contributions to this lifetime included loving each person for the person they were and helping them become more than they thought they could be. She loved all her kids and was so very proud of all of them and the memories she shared with each. The many memories include the wonderful meals she cooked, the doilies she crocheted, the quilts, the baby blankets, the Christmas cookies and the German bread called stolen. She baked vast amounts of cookies and German bread to make sure to have plenty for everyone. Many people will miss this act of kindness because her gestures were as sweet as her food. Special people of interest: Paula, Doug, Sonny & Evelyn, Anneliese, Blackmans, Ms. Hargrove & MJ, Terry, the kindness of the staff in CCU and finally, to her friend, Dr. Jerry Miller for giving us those years with her. She will be missed but still remembered in thoughts and prayers. The family thanks everyone for their kindness and condolences. She was our ‘Sunshine.’ Memorial Visitation will be held from 6:00pm-8:00pm with a Memorial Service to begin at 7:00pm, Thursday, December 6, 2012 at Sunset Funeral Home Northeast. Interment will follow at Fort Bliss National Cemetery. Services entrusted to Sunset Funeral Home Northeast. Please visit on-line register book at www.sunsetfuneralhomes.net
