On February 6, 2016, one month before her 94th birthday, Margaret Arrieta Torres passed away peacefully in her home of 52 years. She is mourned by her daughter Mary Margaret Adame and Mary Margaret's husband Rafael Adame, her granddaughters Nikki Adame-Winningham and Gabbi Almengor, their husbands Charles Adame-Winningham and Rick Almengor, respectively, her great-granddaughter Soraya Almengor, and her brothers Mauro and Alfredo Arrieta. She was predeceased by her parents, Amparicio and Maria Arrieta, and her siblings Isabel Padilla, Rosa Arrieta, Maria Luisa Inocencio, and Manuel Arrieta.
Margaret Torres was a fierce and independent woman extraordinary for her generation. She graduated from Bowie High School on January 19, 1940. She then served as a civil servant at Fort Bliss for 53 years. Over the course of her service she was awarded four challenge coins: the 377th Theater Army Area Command (Roving Sands) presented by Major General Robert H. G. Waudby, U.S. Army Air Defense Artillery Center and Commander's Award for Excellence presented by Colonel Jeffrey Gault Garrison Commander, and in honor of 50 years of service, Major General John Costello awarded her the Director's Award for Excellence. In 2001 she received the Department of the Army Meritorious Civilian Service Award medal for distinguishing herself through exceptional performance of duty with the Air Defense Artillery Test Directorate, U.S. Army Operational Trust Command, Fort Hood, Texas.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, February 12, 2016 at Sunset Funeral Home-West, 480 N. Resler Dr. El Paso, Texas 79912.
