Manuel M. Prieto was surrounded by four generations of his family as he passed away on July 18, 2013. He was born in El Paso Texas on November 19, 1924. Manny graduated in 1942 from Bowie High School in El Paso and attended The Texas State School of Mines and Metallurgy (now UTEP) majoring in Engineering until 1943 when joined the US Army following his brother to war.
Manny was a proud veteran having served with the US Army 87th Infantry Division 312th Engineer Combat Battalion in Germany & Belgium during World War II. He returned home to El Paso in September 1945 with three battle stars which included one for The Battle of the Bulge.
Manny and his wife Angela built one of El Paso’s first premier construction firms, MM Prieto Company, from his father’s one truck house painting operation. He always said he worked on the best houses in the city, such as the UTEP Hoover House, Loretto Academy and the housing on Fort Bliss. The MMP Company doors closed after 75 years in 1999. He served on the El Paso Airport Board and was active with Home Builders Association of El Paso.
His recent years were spent part-time in Houston, Texas. His challenge and goal was to play at all of the 58 golf clubs in the city.
Manny was preceded in death by his wife Angela Z. Prieto, his son Manny Prieto Jr. and son-in-law Bill LeMay. He is survived by his five daughters Corine Prieto, Dorinda Matias and her husband Javier, Diana Grigsby, Eileen LeMay, Angela Olson, eight grand-children and two great-grand sons. He stressed the need of a proper education; in lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in his memory to the University of Texas at El Paso Prieto Endowed Scholarship, UTEP Office of Development, 500 W. University Ave., El Paso, Texas 79998-0524.
Memorial service will be held at 8:30am, Saturday, August 17, 2013 at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in El Paso, Texas.
