Lupe Rede, age 93, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, April 12, 2023 in El Paso, Texas. He was a wonderful son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, Godfather, friend and will be greatly missed. “Honey,” as he was widely and affectionately called, possessed a clever wit, whether with family, friends, or someone he just met. Friends and family were drawn to his sense of humor and caring nature. He easily evoked laughter and joy among those who surrounded him!
He had great passion in life for his spirituality, baseball and was an avid golfer. His greatest passion of all was his family. He married his best friend, Mary Lou, and they enjoyed 68 plus years of marriage. His children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were the beneficiaries of his extraordinary wisdom and capacity to love. He was a passionate lifelong fan of the New York Yankees. During the great depression, he helped his family finances by taking on a paper route and a job as a grocery clerk. He joined the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War. All the while sending his earnings back home to his parents. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Las Cruces and went to work for the Santa Fe Railroad Company which led him to El Paso, TX. In a career spanning 45 years, many of which were spent managing imports and exports by rail between the United States and Mexico. He was a volunteer little league baseball coach, loved and respected by his players for decades. He was a boy scout troop leader and for Bobby Sox softball he served as Player Agent and Umpire-in-Chief. He volunteered building playgrounds for the El Paso Parks and Recreation. His faith-based ministries encompassed serving as Lector, eucharistic minister, sang in the choir, and helped tally the Sunday collections. Lupe is preceded in death by his parents; Pablo O. Rede and Guadalupe Holguin, and his siblings; Manuel Rede, Mary Dominguez, Pablo Rede, Raymond Rede, and Eva Ontiveros. He is survived by his wife; Mary Lou Robles, his children; Ronald “Ron” Rede, Sandra Marie Martinez (Antonio), James Rede, and Carol “Nina” Rede (Joseph Hernandez), his siblings; Angel Rede (Irma), Elisa Puentes (Butch Ruiz), Rosie Witt (John) and Esther Garcia (Roland), 7 grandchildren, as well as 8 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by many extended friends and family to cherish and honor his memory.
Visitation will be held Monday, April 24, 2023 from 5:00pm to 9:00pm with a Holy Rosary to commence at 6:30pm at Sunset Funeral Home-West. A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30am on Tuesday, April 25, 2023 at St. Matthew Catholic Church; 400 W. Sunset. A Graveside Service will follow at 12:00pm, at Memory Gardens of the Valley Cemetery; 4900 McNutt Rd, Santa Teresa, NM 88008.
