Leonard Meredith Mickens, 67, passed peacefully from this life the morning of October 17th, 2011. Leonard (aka Pops, Lenny) was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, where he graduated from Simon Gratz Technical High School. At 18, he joined the US Army and spent 20 years serving his country, in Germany and Korea. A proud member of the Air Defense Artillery Brigade, Leonard eventually made his home in El Paso, TX (Ft Bliss). He dedicated 22 years to US Postal Services. “Pops”, as warmly called, was known for being a mover and shaker, always bringing life where he went, never afraid to speak his mind. He enjoyed bowling, dancing, current events, and spending time laughing with friends and strangers. His greatest love in his life was his mother, children and grand-children, and taking many, many pictures of them. Leonard’s love and generosity are his legacy. He lived a full and prosperous life. Many wonderful memories will continue to live on. Pops is survived by his mother Ida Mickens; sister Rose; four children (and spouses): Alfred Williams, Leonard Mickens (Erica), Ray Mickens (Nicole), Terrell Mickens; eleven grandchildren: Lance Williams, Chanel Williams, Kamani Mickens, Vinzent Williams, Dana Williams, RJ Mickens, Kiahna Mickens, Asia Mickens-Perez, Preston Mickens, Sierra Mickens, and Baylee-Rhea Mickens. He was preceded in death by his father Addison Mickens and his brother Thomas Pinkney. Visitation will be held from 5-8pm, Sunday, October 23, 2011 at Sunset Funeral Home Northeast. Funeral Services will begin at 8am, Monday, October 24, 2011 at Sunset Funeral Home Northeast. Interment will follow at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
