Lakeland Long, transitioned from this life to everlasting life on Friday, 28 October 2011. He passed away in a local hospital following an extended illness. Lakeland was born in Quitman, Georgia on December 1, 1926 to the late Joe M. and Willie V. Long. Lakeland attended school in Hahira Georgia and following graduation in 1948 joined the United States Army. During his 24 years of active service he did a tour in Vietnam and traveled extensively with the military and retired in 1972. Lakeland retired in El Paso, Texas and in 1975, met and married Louise V. Hemmingway. “Lake”, as his friends called him, was an active member of the Fort Bliss Gospel Service for many years and enjoyed many activities with the congregation. Following his retirement from the U. S. Army, he became an insurance agent with the John Hancock Insurance Company for 11 years. Lake retired again and went on to enjoy all of the things he loved doing best; going to church, bowling, fishing, his Masonic meetings and traveling up and down the highways. Lake was preceded in death by his son, Henry W. Long; brother, Sammie; sisters Eloise and Vastie. He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving wife, Louise; son, Lakeland T. Long; son, Terrence A. Long (Susan); brother, Joe A. Long (Diane); sister, Willie May Moss; stepchildren: Doris Harris, Sandra McFarland, Clarence Glasco, Lesia Hudson; and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great grandchildren, church family and friends. Visitation will be held at Sunset Funeral Home Northeast on Hondo Pass from 5-9 p.m. with a Prayer service beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday, November 3, 2011. Funeral Services will begin at 11:00 a.m. November 4th at Sage Hall, Building 311 Pershing Road, Fort Bliss, Texas. Interment will follow at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
