King Merritt

November 11, 1933 — May 6, 2008

Dr. King Merritt passed away at his home in El Paso, Texas, May 6, 2008. He is survived by his wife, Betty; a sister, Betty Hardy, Scottsdale, AZ; daughter, Lorraine Pepping (husband, Jim Pepping), Gilbert, AZ; son, King Merritt of El Paso and three grandsons, Brian Cohen, Adam Cohen and Billy pepping, all of Gilbert, AZ. Dr. Merritt earned his ED. Degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. He taught at the University of Central Florida, The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), and Kearney State College. He was a professor of education and the Director for the Reading Center at UTEP where he specialized in training teachers how to teach reading to children. Dr. Merritt co-authored a book about reading re-medication, which is in now in its 5th edition. Dr. Merritt retired from UTEP in 1995. He was a member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church and leaves behind many friends and extended family members. He completed a tour of duty in Korea while serving the United States Army. A Funeral Mass will be held at 2:00 pm, Tuesday, March 13, 2008 at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, with interment later at St. Augustine Parrish, Chesapeake City, MD. Pallbearers will be Jim Pepping, Jack Blanton, Adam Cohen, Brian Cohen, Billy Pepping, and King Merritt. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to your favorite charity or Youthfire, P.O. Box 370006, Services entrusted to Sunset Funeral Homes-West.
