Jose “Joe” Garcia, born in Montoya, New Mexico Feb. 8, 1929 passed away peacefully June 11, 2009. He served his country honorably in the US Army. He was a Korean Veteran and recipient of several medals, Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star, United Nation Service Ribbon. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys and Diablos fan.
He retired from White Sands in 1988 and was a Life member of VFW Yucca Post 8919, was Officer of the Day for 20 years and Veteran of the Year in 1991.
Preceded in death by mother Josefita, Mama Ninfa, father Lucio Garcia and brother Victor Garcia.
Survived by wife of 32 years Evangelina Garcia. Sons Joe Garcia (Shelli), and Jimmy Garcia. Daughters Charlotte Peterson (Jim), Janet Gregory (John), and Shirley Unruth (Terry). Grandchildren Andre, Jordan, Nick, Terry, Kimberly, Lindsay and two great-grandchildren Lou Lou and Brenly Jo. Brothers Eloy, Beto and Horacio Garcia. Sisters Poncy Napier, Pauline Sanchez and Nolita Anaya. Numerous relatives, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at Sunset Funeral Homes-Northeast from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm with recitation of the vigil/rosary at 7:00 pm on Monday, June 15, 2009. Funeral Mass will be at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment with full Military Honors will follow at Fort Bliss National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be sons, Joe and Jimmy, grandsons, Andre, Nick, and Terry, brother, Horacio Garcia and brother-in-law, Johnny Anaya. Services entrusted to Sunset Funeral Homes-Northeast.
