Jorge Alfredo Avendano

Jorge Avendaño passed away on November 30, 2007 at age 45, loving son of Enriqueta Avendaño (nee Fuentes) and dear brother of Areli, Enrique, Carlos and Efrain Avendaño and loving nieces and nephew, departed this earth to be with our Lord. Jorge graduated from UTEP with a music education major. During his two decades as an El Paso teacher, mentor and friend, Jorge taught music at Putnam, Western Hills, Roberts, and Zach White. He spent his last 13 years as the band director at the Hornedo Middle School. He served numerous times as a clinician for the Texas Music Educators Association and the Texas Bandmasters Association. His students have consistently been among the top in the state; many have performed with Texas All-State orchestras and bands. Jorge has also held the principal tubist seat with the El Paso Symphony for 20 seasons. He played under the direction of conductor Abraham Chavez Jr., Guyer Aykal, and Sarah Ioannides. The majority of his professional life spanned the 12 years that Maestro Guyer Aykal led the symphony orchestra. Under Maestro Aykal, Jorge traveled with the orchestra to perform in Germany and Turkey and toured with Maestro Aykal’s Turkish Presidential Orchestra on their North American Tour, performing in Avery Fisher Hall and Kennedy Center amongst others. He will be missed by all he touched. A musical tribute and memorial service in honor of Jorge will be held on Tuesday, December 18, at 5:00pm in the new Coronado High School auditorium.
