John Vargas

John C. Vargas a/k/a “El Guapo” passed away on Thanksgiving evening, Thursday, November 26, 2020. He had just celebrated his 59th birthday. John was born in Manhattan, New York, on October 24, 1961. As a teenager, his family returned to Puerto Rico where he graduated from Escuela Superior Ramon J. Davila in Coamo, Puerto Rico, and then left to serve his country proudly in the United States Army. It was there that he met the first love of his life, Jesus Christ, his Lord and Saviour, whom he served for 40 years. John attended Christian Life College in Stockton, California and later settled and became a member of Tacoma UPC for approximately 8 years, in Tacoma, Washington. In 1993, John visited family in El Paso, Texas, where he met the second love of his life, Maricela. After a two year long distance relationship, he packed his belongings, sold his house and left Tacoma and moved to El Paso, Texas, to marry her. John and Maricela had just celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. He leaves behind his wife, Maricela, and his two most proud accomplishments: his son, John Daniel and his daughter, Marisol Damaris, along with his new daughter-in-law, Megan Goewey-Vargas. In 2001, John accepted the call to Pastor a Spanish congregation, Iglesia Santuario Pentecostés, in Socorro, Texas, where he pastored for 19 years and acquired his alias “El Guapo”. He loved teaching God’s word, enjoyed evangelism, and was a great man of faith that lead by example. Pastor John was greatly loved by his church family. Pastor John loved traveling, WWE, qand watching marvel movies with his family and friends. He enjoyed being an active parent in his children’s education and school. Pastor John is proceeded by both his parents, Angel Vargas and Crecencia Colon, and his brothers, Angel Vargas, Sammy Vargas, William Vargas and Robert Figueroa. In addition to his wife and children, Pastor John is survived by his brother Rolando Vargas and his sisters Carmen Maria Vargas, Carmen Delia Vargas and his twin, Diana Rodriguez. A Christian funeral service will be held for Pastor John on Thursday, December 17, 2020 at Sunset Funeral Home - East, 750 N. Carolina Dr., El Paso, Texas. Viewing will be from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm, Celebration of Life service will begin immediately following Military Honors at 6:15 pm. Due to current restrictions, space will be limited. Funeral will be broadcasted through Facebook. Burial will be held at Fort Bliss National Cemetery on Friday, December 18, 2020, which will be a private family event.
